Out of all the hobbits and other free peoples, why do you think Gandalf choose Bilbo?

Because at that time, most hobbits couldn't care less about what happened outside of the Shire. Bilbo, whether he would admit it then or not, had a fascination with the outside world. He loved the tales that Gandalf would tell at parties, and he had a hidden desire to go on an adventure of that sort. Gandalf knew this in Bilbo, and, "All that is gold does not glitter." Though then you wouldn't look for any sign of valor in a young, well-to-do Hobbit, Gandalf knew Bilbo maybe better than Bilbo knew himself.

Yes, I agree with Beranyth. And because I think he knew that his father was a great atventure person to.

if you think about it, in one of the lotr books, frodo says he wishes the ring didn't come to him, and gandalf says something about him being meant to do it. do you get my point?

Do you mean you think that Frodo was fated/destined to receive the Ring? I'm not sure that I totally understand, do you think you could extrapilate a bit more - thanks

I was pretty sure Gandalf chose him because of his family's background. The Took side of Bilbo's family had a history of adventuring.

but why wouldn't he just choose a full-blooded took as opposed to one that's half baggins, half took? or even half brandybuck half took?
and in one of the movies, gandalf says "you were meant to find the ring, just as bilbo was. and that may be an encouraging thought" not too sure about how accurate the quote is, but it goes along the same lines

the ring decides where it goes and whose hands it falls into, at least i think i read that somewhere, though it doesnt make too much sense to me

it didn't specifically choose bilbo. it did, however, basically control stuff after that.

No, if you recall, the Ring came across some one it didn't expect, Bilbo. It's hard to understand why Gandalf would choose Bilbo, perhaps he was merely the most interesting hobbit he knew, maybe he just happened to notice that he was the right age, right height, and yearning for an adventure! "Do not meddle in the affairs of Wizards, for the are suble and quick to anger."

But, maybe it did not know that it would come to that.
