Here's something that iwulff had mentionted in another thread that I thought deserved a discussion all its own.
If Sauron didn't had the master ring, how did he have power over the ringwraiths?

I guess the power of the ring had some "residue" left in Sauron and the Nine were already corrupted and could not "turn back".

Where do you think the Ringwraiths were all the time between when Saroun lost the Ring and when Frodo went with the Fellowship?

My guess is that they were existing rather the same as Sauron was, shapeless and in hiding (in Mordor?), just depending on the fact that the Ring still existed and biding their time until Sauron was strong enough to start rebuilding his stronghold.

Something that bothers me: The men weren't the only ones who recieved rings from Sauron. What happened to the people of other races who recieved them?

Well, the reason the Human Ringbearers end up worst off is that they, being most susceptible to temptation of the Free Races, agreed to pledge the power of their rings to Sauron, which, I believe, none of the other races did. I like that Tolkien chose Men to be this special race, because thus the Ringwraiths serve as a warning to the reader about his/her own fallibility.

The rings do have effects on other races. No dwarven wraiths, sadly, because that would be hilarious, but both dwarves and elves are corrupted somewhat by the power. Elves the least. They generally avoid the temptation because they're too learned in ancient ways and lore, as well as just higher up on the wisdom/willpower food chain. For the dwarves, the rings awaken monstrous greed. They dug too deep in Moria as a result of a ring--and look what that got them. As you can see in my avatar.

how did Sauron gain power over the men? he learned it from me. without the ring sauron still had power, only a fool pours all of his power into something besides himself
