i have heard many theories, ranging from orc to elf on what sauron was. he was, in reality a maia spirit, like gandalf and the balrog. i didn't know this until a little earlier, but i thought it was kind of cool.

I know Gandalf was a Maia, but as for the Balrog I thought it was much like a dragon, or vile creature created by Morgoth. Morgoth did create an army of Balrogs, and if they were all Maia, I'd like to know how the hell the Noldorian Elves (as strong as they may have been) took em out.

Sauron was Maiar. He rebelled and came to Middle-earth with Melkor/Morgorth.

sauron was a maiar, quite possibly the most powerful of all the maiars. the istari and the balrogs were also maiar yet of different levels of power. maiar was often used as just a term for servants of the valar, therefore you could argue that to a very small extent orcs were maiar, although this is reaching. the elves were able to defeat balrogs in war, but it wasnt easy for them, very rare could a single elf take out a balrog as there powers they have were great. keep in mind based on other wars that one elf to about 5 orcs was a fair fight. there were not a ridiculous number of balrogs so it could be assumed in all the battles of the silmarillion, that morgoth was outnumbered, he just had the power of the valar and the maiar on his side, while the sons of feanor went unaided by the gods, thanks to their curse. -don

Get it straight, there were never lots of Balrogs, there Maia! There was never more than ten off them!!! Balrogs almost never died at the hand of the Noldor, the only one was Ecthellion, who killed Gothmog in the square of Gondolin! And the most powerful Maia was Eonwe, or Manwe's herald.(Read the Voyage of Earendil)
