This thread is for discussing Tolkien's character Denethor. What are everyone's thoughts on him? Was he good? evil? Did you like him?

hey, beat me to it, i don't like denethor much, he is'nt my least fave charecter but there's just something about him. i don't think denethor was evil, he only wanted the ring to save gondor, if he was evil he would have wanted the ring to give to sauron. i just don't like the way he treated faramir.

I think Denethor was fine for a ruler of Gondor.
I think he was a horrible father though. This is one family that needed both parents. So sad that his wife died. I don't think Denethor got over it.

The way Denethor was portrayed in the movies made people think that he is evil, evil, evil! But we have to know that, he wasn't always like that. Like Boromir said, "My father was once a noble man." Which is true, he was very valiant and all the responsibility that is put on him as Steward. And he looks to his wife, Finduilas, as a sanctuary. And we say that Denethor hates Faramir because his birth was the death of Finduilas, which is half-true. Finduilas died about...2 years after the birth of Faramir? And well before then Finduilas was from Dol Amroth who is forever connected with the sea, so once she was taken away from that she was unhappy and she became weak everyday and after the birth of Faramir she became very weak and eventually died... So Denethor blames Faramir for that. And Denethor becomes a broken man, with Boromir as his only son that can make him happy. It's really sad... Definately for Faramir, yes, Boromir had more time with their mom but Faramir was connected to Finduilas the most.

...It's not right the way he treated Faramir! I understand that the man had a deep life and since Finduilas died, his heart was broke and full of hate, but that's not a reason to hate his yougest son, treat him like if he was a rat and blame him of Finduilas death... But I believe he was really once a noble man, yes... And a good Steward too! But Finduilas's death changed his heart into stone! He must loved her very much to changed like that since her death! But it's not right what he does with Faramir, because he loves his father very much. And I agree with the fact that Denethor's character in the film is a little bit mean, too... And make the ppl who saw the film think that he is nothing but an evil person who can't love and without a good heart! He is a good person... (except for some family treatments...) PS- Faramir was 5 when his mother died, Kitoky...

I like Denethor. To tell you the truth, I don't hate a single Middlee-arth character. Denethor, to me, seemed a little mental in the head. Maybe with all the goings on and with Boromir dying. Who knows. I almost felt sorry for him though.

i don't agree that he was such a good ruler, and i am saying this fromm the viewpoint of the books. He has to much proud to be a stewart, he wanted power and by this began using the palantir, he was finally captured by the eye of mordor, who showed him his armies and stuff, then he went nuts. I think that a real leader would not do such a thing, although he was very smart in the books, compared to the films. For instance leaving the childeren and woman in the city??? He was also stupid in not loving faramir as much as Boromir, although deep in his heart this wasn't true. Faramir looks a lot like Denethor, but with a few differences, he isn't blinded by power or fame, he didn't wanted the ring and Boromir isn't that wise he is a great strong warrior ofcourse, something that Denethor really liked. What i'm trying to say about denethor is that in some way the evil already was in him, only this was strengthened by Sauron and the power he wanted more then he currently had. I think denethor had a really good role in the story, sort of to make it complete, that is with almost all characters in the book. ;D
