SHORTCUT TO MUSHROOMSIn this chapter Frodo, Sam, and Pippin go to Farmer Maggots, where we get to see some insight into Frodo's character and we learn a bit more about the Black Riders. Farmer Maggot helps the hobbit trio get to the Brandywine Bridge where they meet up with Merry. Questions to Ponder(please feel free to answer one, all, or none of the questions, they are here to help get you thinking about the chapter)

How did the elves affect or not affect Sam?
Sam seems more insightful, almost deeper. I think seeing the elves inspired him in a way. The change isn't outwardly visible.
Do you think the shortcut was worth it? Did it help the trio on their journey?
"Short cuts make long delays" They couldn't see ahead far enough with the short-cut and didn't know if there were any obstacles in their way. I think their short-cut was good because it kept them off the road and the Black Riders couldn't go there with their horses.
Why do you think there is mistrust between Hobbits from differing parts of the Shire? How does this compare to the real world?
I see the mistrust between Hobbit families depending on where they live in Shire. I think Tolkien may have put this in to make the Hobbits world not seem as totally idealitic. There is prejudice and racism everywhere in the world today, depending on where you live.

Do you think the shortcut was worth it? Did it help the trio on their journey? Yeah, it was longer but worth it in the long run. Cause like what Eru said the Black Riders couldn't follow them.
Any thoughts about the dogs reaction to the Black Rider? Wow! That was one smart dog.
(This is my 1000th post...yay!)

Do you think the shortcut was worth it? Did it help the trio on their journey? It's hard to say. I think it's possible that their journey could have ended up easier, or (for all anyone knows) much harder if they did or didn't take the shortcut. All in all, I guess it's good they did.
Any thoughts about the dogs reaction to the Black Rider? Not too much. I'm not surprised they took on so about the Wraiths; I'd freak out too if I saw them.
Why do you think there is mistrust between Hobbits from differing parts of the Shire? How does this compare to the real world? There's probably mistrust among the Hobbits of the Shire because they're from different parts, have different ways of thinking, and different customs. Hobbiton Hobbits have a very calm-collected way of thinking and feeling, whereas Buckland Hobbits tend to take on (very slightly) a bolder outlook on things. I don't think they completely respect each others' customs; rather, they look down upon it. The real world is much like this because people tend to look down on one another if they're not like that person, or if they're not from that region. As an example, someone from America might not welcome someone from Asia, because their ways are so different. People fear differences, sadly enough.
