Since things are getting quiet around here, I thought we'd revive this topic, which I hope will get some activity going!
Who is the hero of The Lord of the Rings and why?

Frodo. The overwhelming theme of LotR and the Sil is that it's not conventional force or splendor, i.e. the elven hosts in Middle Earth or Aragorn and his friends, but the unlooked-for heroes who will win the day with their courage. The least and most obscure, who are brimming with a different kind of conflict resolving energy. Plus Frodo did actually contribute the most to Sauron's downfall. They would have lost if frodo hadn't gotten that ring down into the mountain. Well, I should say Frodo/Smeagol....ultimately smeagol's part was small, but without him at the end, frodo might have kept it.
Let's just say the hero is Art. That's the answer Tolkien would have looked for.

Hmm... "The hero is Art." I want to think about that some more before I reply, but that's definitely very interesting, Beren!
