Many people see the themes of the Lord of the Rings to be outdated and romantic; others say that the books' values are precisely those society needs to preserve in the future. What do you think?

I totally agree! Loyalty,friendship, contentment with what you have,love of country an etc

I agree, too, Elanor (big surprise!). I do think Tolkien's books are idealistic and romantic, but thank goodness they are! I think that only idealism ever gets us anywhere; our society seems to think that being realistic is good because reality equals truth, but I think this over-simplifies the matter. Where would we be if in the distant past someone had said, "Oh, yes, courage/undying loyalty/commitment to doing good/believing in yourself/selflessness is all very nice, but, honestly, it's just not going to happen?"
