Why doesn't Tolkien give Glorfindel a bigger part to play? He seems like such a promising character; in "Flight to the Ford," "Many Meetings," and "The Council of Elrond," it really does seem (to me, at least) that Tolkien is setting up a new hero figure, but then Glorfindel never really plays a major part in the story. Elrond considers making him a member of the Company of the Ring, but Merry and Pippin insist on going. Why didn't Tolkien just put Glorfindel in, say, Legolas's place as a member of the Fellowship?
