According to the Silmarillion, Orodreth is Finarfin's son and Gil-galad is Fingon's son. That's completely wrong!
In the History of Middle-Earth, C. Tolkien admits that the above was an ephemeral idea and should not have been in the Sil. He discovered that his father had actually intended to have this:
Finwe married Indis and had 4 children: Findis, Fingolfin, Irime, Finarfin.
Fingolfin had 3 children: Fingon, Turgon, Aredhel.
Finarfin had 4: Finrod, Angrod, Aegnor, Galadriel.
Findis was female so when Maedhros gave his high-kingship away it went to the eldest male descendant of Finwe present, Fingolfin. When Fingolfin, then Fingon, died, Fingon had no children so Turgon became king (read Silmarillion). When Turgon died, he had no male heir so Finrod would have been ruler but he had been killed long before and so did Angrod and Angrod's son, ORODRETH. Since Orodreth's daughter Finduilas was female, her brother, GIL-GALAD became king. There you have it . Look on a search engine or read The Histories of Middle-Earth for proof.

I read about this sometime ago, who is the father of Gil-galad, Fingon or Orodreth? the debate can go on fore ever. For anyone interested there is a great artical by Michael Martinez (sure he needs no introduction) called Gil-galad was an Elven-King. www.suite101.com/article.cfm/tolkien/44954

I thought it was just me! I couldn't figure it out when I was reading the Sil, but it was so confusing anyway, that I thought it must be my own mucking up. Oh, I'm glad to read your posts, guys

Wait, I'm curious about Michael Martinez. He (or someone under his name) was a member of The Ringers, and I have fond memories of many heated debates with him over such things as the shape of Elf ears. Is he prominent in the LotR community?

If you use the link in Shadowfax post you will find numerous articles by Michael Martinez on the Suite 101 site he has also written/edited a few books on Tolkien which you will find on the site also. I have printed most of them off & put them in a binder (the articles). He is pretty prolific on our favorite subject/author/books. However since this past Nov. he has been on hiatus due to carpal tunnel problems with his hands. He needs to get a voice-activated system so he can keep on writing. I keep checking the site for new stuff by MM ,so far though, nothing new! Mineralady ![:D](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v347/Hannah22/Fourm/grin.gif)
