Wow, that's a good question. I had never though about that. Actually, I think whatever-his-name-was that killed the dragon was the hero. They set out to get their treasure back from the dragon, and it was him that killed the dragon. So, I think actually that he is the hero. I don't think, actually (I know, I'm saying that a lot) that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit to make Bilbo the hero, probably just introduce the Ring and Golem, aaaaand, maybe a few other things.

I know Tolkien didn't use The Hobbit to introduce the Ring and Gollum because he only wrote LotR because he was "begged" to. He really wanted to continue working on what we call, The Silmarillion. The Hobbit started out as a bedtime story for his children.
