THREE IS COMPANYThis is the time when Frodo sells Bag End and starts his feigned move to Crickhollow. Merry went on ahead in a cart with some of Frodo's belongings and Frodo, Pippin, and Sam walked together. On the way, the met up with Black Riders and Frodo is really tempted to put on the Ring, for the first time. They also meet elves who help save them from Black Riders and Gildor gives Frodo some advice. Questions to Ponder(please feel free to answer one, all, or none of the questions, they are here to help get you thinking about the chapter)

What did you think about the fox? Why do you think Tolkien included this?I thought it was cool how the fox knew that it was not normal for hobbits to be sleeping under a tree. Although I'm clueless as to why Tolkien put that in there. Compare Bilbo's Road poem (Chapter 1) to Frodo's Road poem (Chapter 3). Any thoughts?I loved Frodo's poem! ![:D](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v347/Hannah22/Fourm/grin.gif)

What did you think about the fox? Why do you think Tolkien included this? I actually think this a powerful piece in the book. Because here you have this fox who spies the Hobbits sleeping, and far from home. The fox wonders what they could be doing, yet he never finds out anything more. It's just so rich when you have a small object, or situation (fox) than can be compared to something so huge and important (Ring, the War, e.t.c.) That part gets me every time.
How do the Black Riders make you feel? They make me wonder a great deal about them. I'm pretty sure that if they knew what the nine rings would do to them before they took them, they definitely wouldn't have taken them. Creatures like those always give me a lot of question.
Why does Gildor call Frodo "Elf-Friend"? Do you think this is important? Why or why not? I think Gildor called Frodo "Elf-friend" because of several reasons: 1. Frodo's ability to speak some Elvish 2. Bilbo's friendship with Elves 3. Frodo's welcoming attitude towards Elves. Maybe possibly becaue Frodo carried a burden that would determine the fate of Middle-earth.
