I feel that Professor Tolkien must have been such a sensitive person. I think his wives illness put him through an incredible strain and it's a wonder he remained such an gentle and likeable man. An Icelandic woman I read about was a nanny to his children for a while, and she said, after he died, that living in his home had not always been easy because of his wive's mood, but he always had a smile for everybody, especially his children, even when she knew for a fact he was deeply troubled
