Did you know that there was a LOTR animated movie made. I dont know when but it was a while before the movie came out. It shows The Fellowship and the Two Towers. It is really bad and dosent look anything real or something you could imagine. The characters are weird and are completely differet from the ones in the movie. The way they act and talk I mean. Sometimes it would cut to real people dressed up and this madde it hard to follow. If you are curious get it and watch it but I wouldnt spend my last dollar on it.

There is an RotK and Hobbit too... I think the animated version is more true to the book! I mean it may look bad when compared to the new movie... but I still like it when I watched it.

Yes, I own it. And I agree about the quality. That is why I have failed to make any other mention of it. I do not like it. I did enjoy The Hobbit. But I saw that many years ago (I don't own that). I have never seen The Return of the King animated movie. But my brother has and he told me about it.

yes, both the fotr / two towers and rotk cartoon movies were terrible. I don't even want to explain more on fotr/two towers because i hated it so much. rotk was full of plot holes and songs that made me want to burn my house down. ....well, maybe not that extreme, but it was really bad.

I thought I had replied to this topic already, but hey I am getting older too. I own this too. I guess this makes me a Tolkien geek. I appreciate it for what it is. It was created in the 70s and the style of the cartoon was new and quite advanced for it's time. It was created for all audiences - children and adults. Thus the style of animation. If you take the time to sit through the whole thing, you will see where PJ got a few of his ideas.

The animated version was much for children I think, and it was terrific for it's time. I respect it but the Bakshi version...oh my goodness, how I laughed at the pictures.....

FotR and TTT cartoons came on the cartoon network a few weeks ago. I agree that they are terrible. My friend called me to tell me it was on and we ended up watching it and laughing hysterically the whole time. It was really sad. I recorded it though. I also saw an article in the special LotR entertainment weekly where they talked to the guy who made them and I didn't like him. He talked about how Frodo was asexual or something. weird...

i don't think the bakshi version is that bad - true there are alot of annoying things ( sam's blundering and aragorns little tunic and knee boots amongst other things) and alot of inaccuracies - (boromir looking like a viking and the fire of isengard being fireballs amongst other things) - but then there are alot of innaccuracies in jacksons version - elves at helms deep etc.
even with it's innacurracies i think the bakshi version in many areas seems to be more true to the books than jacksons - and also you must consider when it was made (mid 70's?). - the cutting to live action is a technique called rotoscoping (which i think is used pretty much throughout the film ) where live actors are painted over - i think just sometimes they painted completely over the actors making it look like a normal cartoon sometimes. (disneys "snow white" was rotoscoped by BTW)
i used to love the bakshi version as a kid - it used to be on british tv every once in a while and was a good film to laze around in the holidays and watch. i also think i used to like it more as it was the only way to "see" the events etc in LOTR - now of course we've got the jackson films-
now we have the jackson versions to compare against the bakshi - the bakshi version becomes worse - so i can see why those who came to the jackson version first think the bakshi version rubbish. as was said above if you watch the bakshi version you'll see where jackson got many ideas from - just two examples - the black rider on the road out of the shire both the bakshi and jackson versions are very similar - and both slightly different to the book, - also the shot of odo proudfoots feet on the table at bilbos going away party (or everard proudfoot as he is in the film) - if you listen to the diretors commentary you'll hear jackson say it is a "tip of the hat" to the bakshi version. ....i could go on but i think i have rambled on a bit there - sorry!
