I moved it into General Tolkien - because it I think this could spawn a whole range of theories and ideas.
So does anyone one have any ideas as to why they didn't remove the palantir?

i think they may have trusted him at the time. he wasn't malicious before he communicated with sauron through the palantir.

Did they even know there was a palantir there?

Yes they did, they were placed at all the great places. Minas Tirith, Minas Ithil, Osgiliath, Amon Sul, Orthanc, you get the idea.

What I was meaning was did they even know they were there during the 3rd age. Saruman and Denethor kept their's hidden. I thought that they were lost over the years.

most were accounted for. the one at osgiliath was destroyed, saruman had the one at orthanc, sauron had the one at minas ithil/morgul, denethor had the one at minas tirith. i can only think of amon sul that was lost.

The Seven Seeing Stones were made by Feanor in Eldamar in the Days of the Trees; the elves gave them to the Men of Númenor and Elendil brought them to Middle-earth in the seven Ships he built.
The stones were kept:
1. City of Annúminas 2. Tower Elostirion in the Emyn Beraid near Mithlond 3. Watching Tower of Amon Sûl (Weathertop) 4. Osgiliath in Gondor 5. Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul) 6. Minas Anor (Minas Tirith) 7. Orthanc in Isengard
What happened to them: N°1 and N°3 drowned in the Bay of Forochel together with the Last King Arvedui in TA 1975 when he fled to Mithlond.
N°2, Last Palantír of the North, didnt correspond with the others; Elendil only used it to see westwards to Aman; Elrond took it with him in his ship.
N°4 was the most mighty and (even before N°3) biggest one; he was also called Anárions Stone and was lost during the Kinstrife of Eldacar and Castamir in TA 1437 when the Tower was burnt.
N°5, Isildur's Palantír, found his way into the hands of Sauron at the Fall of Minas Ithil in TA 2002 who used it to contact Saruman. He disappeared in TA 3019.
N°6 was often used by Denethor; he most probably still lies in his burnt hands in Rath Dínen in Minas Tirith.
N°7, the last one, was given to Aragorn after the fall of Orthanc in TA 3019; its not clear what happened to it, Aragorn's son Eldarion probably inherited it.
woah long post..

Its capital, and the seat of its Kings, was at Annúminas on Lake Nenuial. Now I believe it's Northwest of the Shire(used to anyways).
The Tower Elostirion is on Emyn Beriad (Tower Hills), right outside the Grey Havens.
