there was a post on the hobbit thread about what bilbos job was. i had always assumed he did as hobbits do, they live, garden, avoid the outside world, etc of course except for bilbo/frodo/sam/merry/pippens adventuring. but it made me think, do any of the characters anywhere in tolkiens major works have a job that defies archetype. i mean, hobbits that werent farmer/gardener types. dwarves that werent miners, etc. or was the business of capitalism just not dealt with in the realm of middle earth? -don

I guess being a mythology it had very standard stereotypes. I think this made it much easier to define the characters.
Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin were a rare breed of Hobbit because they were not the norm according to the rest of the Hobbits. They went off on an adventure. Fatty was also friends with this lot but he was more typical of Hobbits and stayed behind.
Just some thoughts.

yeah. and not all dwarves were specifically miners. they were craftsmen, too.
"seven for the dwarves, great craftsmen..."
