in the hobbit, it takes about a year to go from the shire, through mirkwood and up a little ways and back. in the lotr series, it takes them not quite as long to get from the shire to mordor and back (they left september/october and came back around april/may) any thoughts?

A simple guess, for I have not read The Hobbit in many years. But I would assume that Frodo had the help of much faster means of travel (ie the boats given to them at Lothlorien, Shadowfax, The Eagles at the end, ect).

true, but still-he hardly traveled anywhere with the eagles and he only traveled a little ways with galadriel's boats, and only gandalf rode shadowfax, not frodo/sam

This is true, but many differant paths were taken by each set of travelers, perhaps one way was longer or shorter (not on paper, but to travel) than another?

not too mention all the chaos that ensued at the end of bilbos journey surely added to that amount of time, all frodo had to do was get his finger bit off. -don

but frodo did take a long time to get home. he went really slowly the whole way home (not to mention resting in every shelter along the way), starting with about a month in minas tirith
