I've never read it. And I wasn't planning on it.
So I think you might be ok...maybe.

I have yet to read it...It's such a hard book to read. But I do plan on reading it as soon as I get my big pile of other books I need to read, done. Which I hope will be soon...

Well elanor it seems that you are not alone - even some Valar haven't read the book yet. I, personally, have read it twice. The first time was really hard; the second time a little easier. The geography always gets me.

You should all read it. Although it is somewhat hard to read, it is worth it. It really helped me understand a lot and once i got done i loved it. But i admit the first time i picked it up and started reading, i had no idea what was going on so i gave up. don't give up! ![:D](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v347/Hannah22/Fourm/grin.gif)

Weeell, I've finished about 30 pages and I'm disinclined to agree with you Manwe...but it is very! interesting and beautiful. I also found it helpful to read the explanations by the author. elanor

Elanor, if you have any questions or discover something neat about what you're reading just start a new thread and we can all talk about it. ![:)](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v347/Hannah22/Fourm/smiley.gif)

I know others who also found it difficult, but the beginning looks in some ways, like genesis, it is very clearly that he got loads of ideas from the bible. Anyway just wanted to say that i didn't found it that difficult to read, i have read it twice, but i thought that LOTR was a much better book. Although that it rather obvious because the Silmarilion is more a history book with short stories about the great deeds in the north of Middle Earth. Just try and read the stuff, i found i really informative, and it helps with explaining things like the Valar and stuff.

That it is. But hey, your sig is off. That line doesn't have Melkor's name in it.

Well, now I've finished it and although I'm STILL disinclined to agree with Manwe, I absolutely loved it and I can't wait to start it again to take in the details. elanor

I never manage to hold back my tears when I read the Ainulindale, and the Sil is one of the strongest reading experiences I've ever known. One of my dearest passions. I do agree, though, that the Sil isn't a cover-to-cover book, and it is not really hard to read when it is done in the proper way. It is important to read the Sil to a complete understanding of Tolkien world. As far as drawing lines between the Sil and The Bible... well it is a complicated matter, even though some similarities are clear... after all Tolkien was a devoted catholic... For all of you that have not read the Sil... take that precious book out from the dusty corners of your shelves! It is a treasure for Tolkien fans and yes - extremely informative. Keeping a journal of all the names and their meaning helps to get started... after a while you wont need it anymore, and you'll be able to enjoy the beautiful history of The Elves.

It's not terribly difficult to follow the story, but keeping names and places straight is certainly harder than in The Lord of the Rings. I'm currently reading it, and on the next turn I plan to keep notes on everything, as you suggest. The Silmarillion is very beautifully written and is very much in the Anglo-Saxon storytelling style. Also, while I agree that parts of it bear some resemblance to the Book of Genesis, I think it important to note that so do many other creation myths. The early parts of the Silmarillion are, I would argue, much less allegories to the Bible as they are an interpretation of Creation pulling from many sources as inspiration.
