So what do we know about Hobbits? Descriptions and characteristics, etc. Whatever you know about them.

In another thread we started talking about Hobbits and if they can have beards.

I believe that hobbits can have beards. In the prologue to The Lord of the Rings - Concerning Hobbits, it mentions the 3 different breeds of hobbits - the Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides.

In the description of those it only says that Harfoots were beardless but not any of the others.

Well, I've finally had some time to look into this and respond.

Here's what I found:

Harfoots


Stoors


Fallohides


Now with this list maybe we could figure out what breed our hobbit friends belong to.

Anyone care to guess about what breed(s) Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are?

I don't know...I think they're stoors...

We know that the Hobbits were in Middle-Earth before anyone came, before the Numenoreans...before the elves.

Though alot of people say that Men and Elves and Dwarves do not acknowledge the existance of Hobbits, which isn't technically true, Men and Elves have known the Hobbits were there, they never made any record of them. Only the Elves took record but they concentrate on their own culture.

I think the Hobbits of the Shire are a bit of a mixture of Hobbit types.

For example the Bucklanders act and look more like the Stoors, but the rest of the Shire did not take to swimming or going on boats (they were afraid of the water).

It says in the prologue to FOTR that there was a strong Fallohidish strain among the Tooks and Masters of Buckland, and that the original founders of Hobbiton were the Fallohide brothers Marcho and Blanco. It also says that many Stoors have down on their chins (so probably they don't have actual beards), and that no Harfoots or Fallohides have any trace of a beard. But the Harfoots were supposed to be the most normal and representative of Hobbits, and the most numerous, and they continued living in holes for a long time.

The hobbits weren't in Middle Earth befor anyone else - in FOTR, Tom Bombadil says he was there before anyone else, and he seemed to indicate the order of arrival was elves, men, hobbits.

I think Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin are Harfoots.
The description of the Harfoots is exactly the portrait of the 5 Hobbits mentioned.

I am a Fallohide,and I think Frodo is to.
Fairer skin and hair,
Lovers of trees and woodland,( Frodo is always up a tree)
Skill in language and song,( Frodo loves his books).

Billin - good you quote some examples of Frodo being up a tree and his love for books. I think this is neat and would like to have some references.

I have two references from the film.-Frodo siting in a tree reading a book,at the begining, and Frodo siting in a tree smokeing a pipe after he has left Bag end with sam.
And a fue small references from the book.-
Gndalf laughed,`I hope he will . but nobody will read the book however it ends.` Oh they may in years to come. Frodo has read some already,as far as it has gone. Page 32.
There was plenty of everything left for Frodo. And of course, all the chief treasures,as well as the books.page 37.
He was sometimes seen far from home walking in the hills and woods. page 41.
Soon they hada merry crackle of flame at the foot of a large fir-tree and they sat round it for a while, until they began to nod. page 71
After some debate they all climed up into the crotch of a larg holm-oak,whose thick branches springing together from the trunk made a good hiding-place. page 682.

Good references. Although I should tell you that the film isn't really taken as a good source because PJ and the rest of the gang, made quite a few changes to the characters.

I think that most hobbits are Harfoots, and I agree that the Bucklanders were Stoors, and I also agree that Frodo probably had quite a bi of Fallohide in him.

I think the "royal hobbits" are part Fallohide (like Merry and Pippin) and the Brandybuck and Bree hobbits are part Stoor. I think frodo is mostly Harfoot.
